Lake Merritt Institute: Save Our Lake — Every Bag Counts!

In 2024, with the help of 1,862 volunteers, Lake Merritt Institute removed approximately 75,960 gallons of trash from the shorelines and waters of Lake Merritt.

This year, as of November 1, 2025, we’ve already exceeded last year’s total, removing 93,960 gallons of trash! Thanks to increased volunteer turnout, we’re able to tackle everyday challenges five days a week, rain or shine, year-round, keeping Lake Merritt clean for wildlife and community.

Yet, our funding and contracts have not kept pace with inflation, and the threat of future defunding leaves our work more vulnerable than ever. Your gift this Giving Tuesday ensures we can continue removing trash, educating youth, and protecting Lake Merritt, no matter the challenges ahead.
